'old square new house'
We created this small town house on a square in the centre of Ghent. The potentials of the tiny building plot are fully put to use in a design that combines the history of a place with contemporary living.
The commission included a small home for a single lady with guest rooms for family and friends. The result is a bright town house where each level is configured to capture light, create views and maintain privacy. On the ground floor, a mudroom/garage and entrance are combined with a master bedroom and private patio. On the first floor, a living space fits in between a sunny terrace and a front balcony. The sitting room looks onto a square filled with trees and the dining area opens up to a South oriented terrace with a view of the patio. On the second floor, guest amenities are located.
The narrow front facade, woodwork and poured concrete balcony are carefully detailed and finished with stucco, white and green lacquer paint and a polished brass railing.
The house is fair and square, old and new, equally conventional as unusual.
